Articulations and slurs

If not slurred, every note performed by winds, brass, or strings, is articulated (either tongued or bowed). Multiple notes under a single slur indicate no new tounging or new bow. Especially in woodwinds and brass, it is important to incidate articulations - either on each note or with a general textual indication for a section or a whole piece. String players will play detaché if nothing is indicated. Wind players will make a decision based on the context. It's best not to take this chance.

As a rule of thumb, if a note in the woodwinds or brass is not under a slur, write in an articulation.
